The day before this incident, someone made the right call

Our awareness campaign starts with a warning: the day before the incident, battery safety matters.

This warning became a case study.

What happened in Vantaa, Finland

A transport driver in Vantaa, Finland picked up a Bebat PRO metal drum from a telephone repair shop. Inside: batteries from electrical and electronic equipment. During transit, a fire broke out. Thermal runaway, the scenario that battery logistics professionals fear most.

The fire stayed inside the drum.

No fire propagation. No injuries to the driver. By the time the fire brigade arrived, the situation was under control. The Bebat PRO drum had done exactly what it was engineered to do.

"The collection point and the driver acted according to instructions. The situation was quickly brought under control without personal injuries or the spread of fire to the vehicle."

This is what the day before looks like

Our campaign is built on a simple but uncomfortable truth: you cannot prepare after an incident. The window for preparation is always before, and it is always today.

At Recser Oy, preparation had already happened. Three decisions made the difference:

1. The right equipment was in place

The Bebat PRO drum features a patented lid with a flame-arresting filter and fire-resistant steel construction. It is designed for the specific risks of Lithium-ion battery collection: residual charge, damaged cells, and the unpredictable nature of thermal runaway. A standard industrial drum is not designed with this in mind.

2. Clear instructions for exceptional situations

The collection point and driver had access to documented protocols for exactly this kind of event. Under pressure, with a fire in the back of a vehicle, people act on what they already know. Improvisation is not a safety strategy.

3. A trained driver

Driver training is the element most often treated as optional. This incident is a reminder that it is not. The driver's correct response was the final link in a chain that kept a transport fire from becoming something far worse.

The question worth asking now

This incident ended well. But consider: what would have happened with a different drum? With a driver who hadn't been trained? With no protocol to follow?

Lithium-ion batteries are in every product category: smartphones, e-bikes, power tools, light means of transport. As volumes grow, so does the frequency of collection and transport. The risk is not theoretical. It is happening.
